CRLS Research Guide

Alternative Formats

Tip Sheet 15a

Ask these questions:

What do you mean?

Some teachers give you freedom in how you present what you have learned about your research topic. Just remember that whatever format you use, you must include all of the substantial information necessary to prove your thesis. Even if you write a play and produce it as a way of presenting your research project, you need to go through all of the steps of the research process. Most teachers aren't fooled by glitz. They want to see substance in the form of the knowledge you have gained from the project and what kind of thinking you have done to show that you really understand it.

That said, here is a list of some alternative ways to present your project, other than the traditional paper. Some of them may need to be combined with others to make a complete project. If you are taking the initiative to create an alternative format, be smart and have the format approved by your teacher in advance.
